ESL: Advanced Level

The Tennessee Department of Education has set the following expectation of its ELL students:

Goal 2: To use English to achieve academically in all content areas.
    Standard 2: Students will use English to obtain, process, contruct,   
                        and provide subject matter information in spoken and written form.


    As students begin to achieve English Language proficiency at

an advanced level, they may be exited from the ESL program.

Advanced ELL students and exited ESL students will be required
to perform as well in written language and communication as

spoken language and communication.  Use these tips to help

improve your student's writing.


                                           Tips to Improve Content of Writing:

-Make sure writing has a clear theme.

-Make sure wriiting has a beginning, middle, and end.

-Make sure writing has details and use adjectives for description.

-Make sure stories are interesting for readers.

-Don't use "Dead" or overly used words.

                                          Tips to Improve Mechanics of Writing:

-Make sure to include your name.

-Begin sentences with capital letters.

-Capitalize proper nouns.

-Indent paragraphs.

-Check the spelling of words that don't look correct using a dictionary or circle those words and ask a teacher for help later.

-Make sure sentences have the correct punctuation.
